Genesis 32

Esau Comes to Meet Jacob

1 So Jacob went on his way, andthe angels of God met him.

2 When Jacob saw them, he said, “ThisisGod’scamp.” And he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

3 Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brotherin the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

4 And he commanded them, saying,“Speak thus to my lord Esau, ‘Thus your servant Jacob says: “I have dwelt with Laban and stayed there until now.

5 I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, thatI may find favor in your sight.” ’ ”

6 Then the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, andhe also is coming to meet you, and four hundred menarewith him.”

7 So Jacob was greatly afraid anddistressed; and he divided the people thatwerewith him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies.

8 And he said, “If Esau comes to the one company and attacks it, then the other company which is left will escape.”

9 Then Jacob said,“O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, theLordwho said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your family, and I will deal well with you’:

10 I am not worthy of the least of all themercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan withmy staff, and now I have become two companies.

11 Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and attack meandthe mother with the children.

12 ForYou said, ‘I will surely treat you well, and make your descendants as thesand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’ ”

13 So he lodged there that same night, and took what came to his hand asa present for Esau his brother:

14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

15 thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals.

16 Then he deliveredthemto the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put some distance between successive droves.”

17 And he commanded the first one, saying, “When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going? Whosearethese in front of you?’

18 then you shall say, ‘Theyareyour servant Jacob’s. Itisa present sent to my lord Esau; and behold, he alsoisbehind us.’ ”

19 So he commanded the second, the third, and all who followed the droves, saying, “In this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him;

20 and also say, ‘Behold, your servant Jacobisbehind us.’ ” For he said, “I willappease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.”

21 So the present went on over before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp.

Wrestling with God

22 And he arose that night and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of Jabbok.

23 He took them, sent them over the brook, and sent over what he had.

24 Then Jacob was left alone; anda Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day.

25 Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; andthe socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him.

26 AndHe said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.”

# But he said,“I will not let You go unless You bless me!”

27 So He said to him, “Whatisyour name?”

He said, “Jacob.”

28 And He said,“Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you havestruggled with God andwith men, and have prevailed.”

29 Then Jacob asked, saying, “TellmeYour name, I pray.”

# And He said,“Whyisitthatyou ask about My name?” And Heblessed him there.

30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: “ForI have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”

31 Just as he crossed over Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip.

32 Therefore to this day the children of Israel do not eat the muscle that shrank, whichison the hip socket, because He touched the socket of Jacob’s hip in the muscle that shrank.

Genesis 33

Jacob and Esau Meet

1 Now Jacob lifted his eyes and looked, and there,Esau was coming, and with him were four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maidservants.

2 And he put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and her children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last.

3 Then he crossed over before them andbowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

4 But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him,and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.

5 And he lifted his eyes and saw the women and children, and said, “Whoarethese with you?”

# So he said, “The childrenwhom God has graciously given your servant.”

6 Then the maidservants came near, they and their children, and bowed down.

7 And Leah also came near with her children, and they bowed down. Afterward Joseph and Rachel came near, and they bowed down.

8 Then Esau said, “Whatdoyoumeanbyall this company which I met?”

# And he said, “Theseareto find favor in the sight of my lord.”

9 But Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.”

10 And Jacob said, “No, please, if Ihave now found favor in your sight, then receive my present from my hand, inasmuch as I have seen your face as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me.

11 Please, takemy blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealtgraciously with me, and because I have enough.”So he urged him, and he tookit.

12 Then Esau said, “Let us take our journey; let us go, and I will go before you.”

13 But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the childrenareweak, and the flocks and herds which are nursingarewith me. And if the men should drive them hard one day, all the flock will die.

14 Please let my lord go on ahead before his servant. I will lead on slowly at a pace which the livestock that go before me, and the children, are able to endure, until I come to my lordin Seir.”

15 And Esau said, “Now let me leave with yousomeof the people whoarewith me.”

# But he said, “What need is there?Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.”

16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.

17 And Jacob journeyed toSuccoth, built himself a house, and made booths for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.

Jacob Comes to Canaan

18 Then Jacob came safely tothe city ofShechem, whichisin the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan Aram; and he pitched his tent before the city.

19 Andhe bought the parcel of land, where he had pitched his tent, from the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for one hundred pieces of money.

20 Then he erected an altar there and called itEl Elohe Israel.

Genesis 34

The Dinah Incident

1 NowDinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, hetook her and lay with her, and violated her.

3 His soul was strongly attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke kindly to the young woman.

4 So Shechemspoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this young woman as a wife.”

5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his livestock in the field; so Jacobheld his peace until they came.

6 Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.

7 And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heardit;and the men were grieved and very angry, because hehad done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter,a thing which ought not to be done.

8 But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.

9 And make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to yourselves.

10 So you shall dwell with us, and the land shall be before you. Dwell and trade in it, and acquire possessions for yourselves in it.”

11 Then Shechem said to her father and her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give.

12 Ask me ever so muchdowry and gift, and I will give according to what you say to me; but give me the young woman as a wife.”

13 But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father, and spokedeceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister.

14 And they said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who isuncircumcised, forthatwouldbea reproach to us.

15 But on thisconditionwe will consent to you: If you will become as weare,if every male of you is circumcised,

16 then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us; and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.

17 But if you will not heed us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and be gone.”

18 And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son.

19 So the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter. Hewasmore honorable than all the household of his father.

20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came to thegate of their city, and spoke with the men of their city, saying:

21 “These menareat peace with us. Therefore let them dwell in the land and trade in it. For indeed the landislarge enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us as wives, and let us give them our daughters.

22 Only on thisconditionwill the men consent to dwell with us, to be one people: if every male among us is circumcised as theyarecircumcised.

23 Willnot their livestock, their property, and every animal of theirsbeours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.”

24 And all whowent out of the gate of his city heeded Hamor and Shechem his son; every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.

25 Now it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Jacob,Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword and came boldly upon the city and killed all the males.

26 And theykilled Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem’s house, and went out.

27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled.

28 They took their sheep, their oxen, and their donkeys, whatwasin the city and whatwasin the field,

29 and all their wealth. All their little ones and their wives they took captive; and they plundered even all thatwasin the houses.

30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi,“You havetroubled meby making me obnoxious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites;and since Iamfew in number, they will gather themselves together against me and kill me. I shall be destroyed, my household and I.”

31 But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a harlot?”

Genesis 35

Jacob’s Return to Bethel

1 Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up toBethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God,who appeared to youwhen you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”

2 And Jacob said to hishousehold and to all whowerewith him, “Put awaythe foreign gods thatareamong you, purify yourselves, and change your garments.

3 Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar there to God,who answered me in the day of my distressand has been with me in the way which I have gone.”

4 So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods whichwerein their hands, and theearrings whichwerein their ears; and Jacob hid them underthe terebinth tree whichwasby Shechem.

5 And they journeyed, andthe terror of God was upon the cities thatwereall around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.

6 So Jacob came toLuz (thatis,Bethel), whichisin the land of Canaan, he and all the people whowerewith him.

7 And hebuilt an altar there and called the place El Bethel, becausethere God appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother.

8 NowDeborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the terebinth tree. So the name of it was called Allon Bachuth.

9 ThenGod appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padan Aram, andblessed him.

10 And God said to him, “Your nameisJacob;your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, but Israel shall be your name.” So He called his name Israel.

11 Also God said to him:“IamGod Almighty.Be fruitful and multiply;a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body.

12 Theland which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants after you I give this land.”

13 Then Godwent up from him in the place where He talked with him.

14 So Jacobset up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it.

15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him,Bethel.

Death of Rachel

16 Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel laboredinchildbirth, and she had hard labor.

17 Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, “Do not fear;you will have this son also.”

18 And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni; but his father called him Benjamin.

19 SoRachel died and was buried on the way toEphrath (thatis,Bethlehem).

20 And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, whichisthe pillar of Rachel’s graveto this day.

21 Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyondthe tower of Eder.

22 And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went andlay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Israel heardaboutit.

Genesis 37

Joseph Dreams of Greatness

1 Now Jacob dwelt in the landwhere his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.

2 Thisisthe history of Jacob.

# Joseph, beingseventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. And the ladwaswith the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought abad report of them to his father.

3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because hewasthe son of his old age. Also hemade him a tunic ofmanycolors.

4 But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, theyhated him and could not speak peaceably to him.

5 Now Joseph had a dream, and he tolditto his brothers; and they hated him even more.

6 So he said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:

7 There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.”

8 And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.

9 Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, “Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.”

10 So he tolditto his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, “Whatisthis dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I andyour brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?”

11 Andhis brothers envied him, but his fatherkept the matterinmind.

Joseph Sold by His Brothers

12 Then his brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem.

13 And Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers feedingtheflockinShechem? Come, I will send you to them.”

So he said to him, “Here I am.”

14 Then he said to him, “Please go and see if it is well with your brothers and well with the flocks, and bring back word to me.” So he sent him out of the Valley ofHebron, and he went to Shechem.

15 Now a certain man found him, and there he was, wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying, “What are you seeking?”

16 So he said, “I am seeking my brothers. Please tell me where they are feedingtheirflocks.”

17 And the man said, “They have departed from here, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them inDothan.

18 Now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, they conspired against him to kill him.

19 Then they said to one another, “Look, this dreamer is coming!

20 Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, ‘Some wild beast has devoured him.’ We shall see what will become of his dreams!”

21 ButReuben heardit, and he delivered him out of their hands, and said, “Let us not kill him.”

22 And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood, butcast him into this pit whichisin the wilderness, and do not lay a hand on him”—that he might deliver him out of their hands, and bring him back to his father.

23 So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that theystripped Josephofhis tunic, the tunic ofmanycolors thatwason him.

24 Then they took him and cast him into a pit. And the pitwasempty;therewasno water in it.

25 And they sat down to eat a meal. Then they lifted their eyes and looked, and there was a company ofIshmaelites, coming from Gilead with their camels, bearing spices, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carrythemdown to Egypt.

26 So Judah said to his brothers, “What profitisthereif we kill our brother andconceal his blood?

27 Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, andlet not our hand be upon him, for heisour brotherandour flesh.” And his brothers listened.

28 ThenMidianite traders passed by; sothebrotherspulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit,and sold him to the Ishmaelites fortwentyshekelsof silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt.

29 Then Reuben returned to the pit, and indeed Josephwasnot in the pit; and hetore his clothes.

30 And he returned to his brothers and said, “The ladisnomore;and I, where shall I go?”

31 So they tookJoseph’s tunic, killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the tunic in the blood.

32 Then they sent the tunic ofmanycolors, and they broughtitto their father and said, “We have found this. Do you know whether itisyour son’s tunic or not?”

33 And he recognized it and said, “Itismy son’s tunic. Awild beast has devoured him. Without doubt Joseph is torn to pieces.”

34 Then Jacobtore his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist, andmourned for his son many days.

35 And all his sons and all his daughtersarose to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and he said, “ForI shall go down into the grave to my son in mourning.” Thus his father wept for him.

36 Nowthe Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaohandcaptain of the guard.

Genesis 38

Judah and Tamar

1 It came to pass at that time that Judah departed from his brothers, andvisited a certain Adullamite whose namewasHirah.

2 And Judahsaw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose namewasShua, and he married her and went in to her.

3 So she conceived and bore a son, and he called his nameEr.

4 She conceived again and bore a son, and she called his nameOnan.

5 And she conceived yet again and bore a son, and called his nameShelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him.

6 Then Judahtook a wife for Er his firstborn, and her namewasTamar.

7 ButEr, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of theLord, and theLordkilled him.

8 And Judah said to Onan, “Go in toyour brother’s wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother.”

9 But Onan knew that the heir would not behis; and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother’s wife, that he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother.

10 And the thing which he did displeased theLord; therefore He killedhim also.

11 Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law,“Remain a widow in your father’s house till my son Shelah is grown.” For he said, “Lest he also die like his brothers.” And Tamar went and dweltin her father’s house.

12 Now in the process of time the daughter of Shua, Judah’s wife, died; and Judahwas comforted, and went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

13 And it was told Tamar, saying, “Look, your father-in-law is going upto Timnah to shear his sheep.”

14 So she took off her widow’s garments, coveredherselfwith a veil and wrapped herself, andsat in an open place whichwason the way to Timnah; for she sawthat Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as a wife.

15 When Judah saw her, he thought shewasa harlot, because she had covered her face.

16 Then he turned to her by the way, and said, “Please let me come in to you”; for he did not know that shewashis daughter-in-law.

So she said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”

17 And he said,“I will send a young goat from the flock.”

# So she said,“Will you givemea pledge till you sendit?”

18 Then he said, “What pledge shall I give you?”

# So she said,“Your signet and cord, and your staff thatisin your hand.” Then he gavethemto her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him.

19 So she arose and went away, andlaid aside her veil and put on the garments of her widowhood.

20 And Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receivehispledge from the woman’s hand, but he did not find her.

21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, “Where is the harlot whowasopenly by the roadside?”

And they said, “There was no harlot in thisplace.”

22 So he returned to Judah and said, “I cannot find her. Also, the men of the place said there was no harlot in thisplace.”

23 Then Judah said, “Let her takethemfor herself, lest we be shamed; for I sent this young goat and you have not found her.”

24 And it came to pass, about three months after, that Judah was told, saying, “Tamar your daughter-in-law hasplayed the harlot; furthermore sheiswith child by harlotry.”

# So Judah said, “Bring her outand let her be burned!”

25 When shewasbrought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “By the man to whom these belong, Iamwith child.” And she said,“Please determine whose theseare—the signet and cord, and staff.”

26 So Judahacknowledgedthemand said,“She has been more righteous than I, becauseI did not give her to Shelah my son.” And henever knew her again.

27 Now it came to pass, at the time for giving birth, that behold, twinswerein her womb.

28 And so it was, when she was giving birth, thattheoneput outhishand; and the midwife took a scarletthreadand bound it on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.”

29 Then it happened, as he drew back his hand, that his brother came out unexpectedly; and she said, “How did you break through?Thisbreachbeupon you!” Therefore his name was calledPerez.

30 Afterward his brother came out who had the scarletthreadon his hand. And his name was calledZerah.

Genesis 39

Joseph a Slave in Egypt

1 Now Joseph had been takendown to Egypt. AndPotiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there.

2 TheLordwas with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

3 And his master saw that theLordwaswith him and that theLordmade all he did to prosper in his hand.

4 So Josephfound favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made himoverseer of his house, and allthathe had he put under his authority.

5 So it was, from the timethathe had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, thattheLordblessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of theLordwas on all that he had in the house and in the field.

6 Thus he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand, and he did not know what he had except for the bread which he ate.

# Now Josephwas handsome in form and appearance.

7 And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said,“Lie with me.”

8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know whatiswith me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand.

9 Thereisno one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because youarehis wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, andsin against God?”

10 So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that hedid not heed her, to lie with herorto be with her.

11 But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the housewasinside,

12 that shecaught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside.

13 And so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside,

14 that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought in to us aHebrew to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.

15 And it happened, when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside.”

16 So she kept his garment with her until his master came home.

17 Then shespoke to him with words like these, saying, “The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came in to me to mock me;

18 so it happened, as I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me and fled outside.”

19 So it was, when his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, saying, “Your servant did to me after this manner,” that hisanger was aroused.

20 Then Joseph’s master took him andput him into theprison, a place where the king’s prisonerswereconfined. And he was there in the prison.

21 But theLordwas with Joseph and showed him mercy, and Hegave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

22 And the keeper of the prisoncommitted to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners whowerein the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing.

23 The keeper of the prison did not look into anythingthatwasunderJoseph’sauthority, because theLordwas with him; and whatever he did, theLordmadeitprosper.

Genesis 40

The Prisoners’ Dreams

1 It came to pass after these thingsthatthebutler and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their lord, the king of Egypt.

2 And Pharaoh wasangry with his two officers, the chief butler and the chief baker.

3 So he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison, the place where Josephwasconfined.

4 And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them; so they were in custody for a while.

5 Then the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, whowereconfined in the prison, had a dream, both of them, each man’s dream in one nightandeach man’s dream with itsowninterpretation.

6 And Joseph came in to them in the morning and looked at them, and saw that theyweresad.

7 So he asked Pharaoh’s officers whowerewith him in the custody of his lord’s house, saying,“Why do you looksosad today?”

8 And they said to him,“We each have had a dream, andthereisno interpreter of it.”

# So Joseph said to them,“Do not interpretations belong to God? Tellthemto me, please.”

9 Then the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, “Behold, in my dream a vinewasbefore me,

10 and in the vinewerethree branches; itwasas though it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes.

11 Then Pharaoh’s cupwasin my hand; and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.”

12 And Joseph said to him,“Thisisthe interpretation of it: The three branchesarethree days.

13 Now within three days Pharaoh willlift up your head and restore you to your place, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand according to the former manner, when you were his butler.

14 Butremember me when it is well with you, andplease show kindness to me; make mention of me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this house.

15 For indeed I wasstolen away from the land of the Hebrews;and also I have done nothing here that they should put me into the dungeon.”

16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, “I alsowasin my dream, and therewerethree white baskets on my head.

17 In the uppermost basketwereall kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head.”

18 So Joseph answered and said,“Thisisthe interpretation of it: The three basketsarethree days.

19 Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head from you andhang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from you.”

20 Now it came to pass on the third day, whichwasPharaoh’sbirthday, that hemade a feast for all his servants; and helifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.

21 Then herestored the chief butler to his butlership again, andhe placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.

22 But hehanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them.

23 Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, butforgot him.

Genesis 41

Pharaoh’s Dreams

1 Then it came to pass, at the end of two full years, thatPharaoh had a dream; and behold, he stood by the river.

2 Suddenly there came up out of the river seven cows, fine looking and fat; and they fed in the meadow.

3 Then behold, seven other cows came up after them out of the river, ugly and gaunt, and stood by theothercows on the bank of the river.

4 And the ugly and gaunt cows ate up the seven fine looking and fat cows. So Pharaoh awoke.

5 He slept and dreamed a second time; and suddenly seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, plump and good.

6 Then behold, seven thin heads, blighted by theeast wind, sprang up after them.

7 And the seven thin heads devoured the seven plump and full heads. So Pharaoh awoke, and indeed, itwasa dream.

8 Now it came to pass in the morningthat his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for allthe magicians of Egypt and all itswise men. And Pharaoh told them his dreams, buttherewasno one who could interpret them for Pharaoh.

9 Then thechief butler spoke to Pharaoh, saying: “I remember my faults this day.

10 When Pharaoh wasangry with his servants, and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, bothme and the chief baker,

11 we each had a dream in one night, he and I. Each of us dreamed according to the interpretation of hisowndream.

12 Now therewasa youngHebrew man with us there, aservant of the captain of the guard. And we told him, and heinterpreted our dreams for us; to each man he interpreted according to hisowndream.

13 And it came to pass, justas he interpreted for us, so it happened. He restored me to my office, and he hanged him.”

14 Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and theybrought him quicklyout of the dungeon; and he shaved, changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh.

15 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, andthereisno one who can interpret it.But I have heard it said of youthatyou can understand a dream, to interpret it.”

16 So Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying,“Itisnot in me;God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.”

17 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph: “Behold,in my dream I stood on the bank of the river.

18 Suddenly seven cows came up out of the river, fine looking and fat; and they fed in the meadow.

19 Then behold, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ugly and gaunt, such ugliness as I have never seen in all the land of Egypt.

20 And the gaunt and ugly cows ate up the first seven, the fat cows.

21 When they had eaten them up, no one would have known that they had eaten them, for theywerejust as ugly as at the beginning. So I awoke.

22 Also I saw in my dream, and suddenly seven heads came up on one stalk, full and good.

23 Then behold, seven heads, withered, thin, andblighted by the east wind, sprang up after them.

24 And the thin heads devoured the seven good heads. SoI toldthisto the magicians, buttherewasno one who could explainitto me.”

25 Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dreams of Pharaohareone;God has shown Pharaoh what Heisabout to do:

26 The seven good cowsareseven years, and the seven good headsareseven years; the dreamsareone.

27 And the seven thin and ugly cows which came up after themareseven years, and the seven empty heads blighted by the east wind areseven years of famine.

28 Thisisthe thing which I have spoken to Pharaoh. God has shown Pharaoh what Heisabout to do.

29 Indeedseven years of great plenty will come throughout all the land of Egypt;

30 but after them seven years of famine willarise, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the faminewill deplete the land.

31 So the plenty will not be known in the land because of the famine following, for itwillbevery severe.

32 And the dream was repeated to Pharaoh twice because thethingisestablished by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

33 “Now therefore, let Pharaoh select a discerning and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt.

34 Let Pharaoh dothis, and let him appoint officers over the land,to collect one-fifthoftheproduceof the land of Egypt in the seven plentiful years.

35 Andlet them gather all the food of those good years that are coming, and store up grain under the authority of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities.

36 Then that food shall be as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of Egypt, that the landmay not perish during the famine.”

Joseph’s Rise to Power

37 Sothe advice was good in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants.

38 And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we findsuchaoneas this, a manin whomisthe Spirit of God?”

39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, thereisno one as discerning and wise as you.

40 You shall be over my house, and all my people shall be ruled according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you.”

41 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I haveset you over all the land of Egypt.”

42 Then Pharaohtook his signet ring off his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand; and heclothed him in garments of fine linenand put a gold chain around his neck.

43 And he had him ride in the secondchariot which he had;and they cried out before him, “Bow the knee!” So he set himover all the land of Egypt.

44 Pharaoh also said to Joseph, “IamPharaoh, and without your consent no man may lift his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”

45 And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphnath-Paaneah. And he gave him as a wifeAsenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On. So Joseph went out overallthe land of Egypt.

46 Joseph was thirty years old when hestood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.

47 Now in the seven plentiful years the ground brought forth abundantly.

48 So he gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities; he laid up in every city the food of the fields which surrounded them.

49 Joseph gathered very much grain,as the sand of the sea, until he stopped counting, foritwasimmeasurable.

50 And to Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, whom Asenath, the daughter of Poti-Pherah priest of On, bore to him.

51 Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: “For God has made me forget all my toil and all myfather’s house.”

52 And the name of the second he called Ephraim: “For God has caused me to befruitful in the land of my affliction.”

53 Then the seven years of plenty which were in the land of Egypt ended,

54 and the seven years of famine began to come,as Joseph had said. The famine was in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

55 So when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Then Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph;whatever he says to you, do.”

56 The famine was over all the face of the earth, and Joseph opened all the storehouses andsold to the Egyptians. And the famine became severe in the land of Egypt.

57 So all countries came to Joseph in Egypt tobuygrain, because the famine was severe in all lands.
