Numbers 35

Cities for the Levites

1 And theLordspoke to Moses inthe plains of Moab by the JordanacrossfromJericho, saying:

2 “Command the children of Israel that they give the Levites cities to dwell in from the inheritance of their possession, and you shallalsogive the Levitescommon-land around the cities.

3 They shall have the cities to dwell in; and their common-land shall be for their cattle, for their herds, and for all their animals.

4 The common-land of the cities which you will give the Levitesshallextendfrom the wall of the city outward a thousand cubits all around.

5 And you shall measure outside the city on the east side two thousand cubits, on the south side two thousand cubits, on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits. The cityshallbein the middle. This shall belong to them as common-land for the cities.

6 “Now among the cities which you will give to the Levitesyoushallappointsix cities of refuge, to which a manslayer may flee. And to these you shall add forty-two cities.

7 So all the cities you will give to the Levitesshallbeforty-eight; theseyoushallgivewith their common-land.

8 And the cities which you will giveshallbefrom the possession of the children of Israel;from the largertribeyou shall give many, from the smaller you shall give few. Each shall give some of its cities to the Levites, in proportion to the inheritance that each receives.”

Cities of Refuge

9 Then theLordspoke to Moses, saying,

10 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them:‘When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan,

11 thenyou shall appoint cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the manslayer who kills any person accidentally may flee there.

12 They shall be cities of refuge for you from the avenger, that the manslayer may not die until he stands before the congregation in judgment.

13 And of the cities which you give, you shall havesix cities of refuge.

14 You shall appoint three cities on this side of the Jordan, and three cities you shall appoint in the land of Canaan, whichwill be cities of refuge.

15 These six cities shall be for refuge for the children of Israel, for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them, that anyone who kills a person accidentally may flee there.

16 ‘But if he strikes him with an iron implement, so that he dies, heisa murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death.

17 And if he strikes him with a stone in the hand, by which one could die, and he does die, heisa murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death.

18 Orifhe strikes him with a wooden hand weapon, by which one could die, and he does die, heisa murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death.

19 The avenger of blood himself shall put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death.

20 If he pushes him out of hatred or,while lying in wait, hurls something at him so that he dies,

21 or in enmity he strikes him with his hand so that he dies, the one who struckhimshall surely be put to death. Heisa murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.

22 ‘However, if he pushes him suddenlywithout enmity, or throws anything at him without lying in wait,

23 or uses a stone, by which a man could die, throwingitat him without seeinghim,so that he dies, while he was not his enemy or seeking his harm,

24 thenthe congregation shall judge between the manslayer and the avenger of blood according to these judgments.

25 So the congregation shall deliver the manslayer from the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall return him to the city of refuge where he had fled, andhe shall remain there until the death of the high priestwho was anointed with the holy oil.

26 But if the manslayer at any time goes outside the limits of the city of refuge where he fled,

27 and the avenger of blood finds him outside the limits of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood kills the manslayer, he shall not be guilty of blood,

28 because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest. But after the death of the high priest the manslayer may return to the land of his possession.

29 ‘And thesethingsshall bea statute of judgment to you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

30 Whoever kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on thetestimony of witnesses; but one witness is notsufficienttestimony against a person for the deathpenalty.

31 Moreover you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer whoisguilty of death, but he shall surely be put to death.

32 And you shall take no ransom for him who has fled to his city of refuge, that he may return to dwell in the land before the death of the priest.

33 So you shall not pollute the land where youare;for blooddefiles the land, and no atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed on it, exceptby the blood of him who shed it.

34 Thereforedo not defile the land which you inhabit, in the midst of which I dwell; forI theLorddwell among the children of Israel.’ ”

Numbers 36

Marriage of Female Heirs

1 Now the chief fathers of the families of thechildren of Gilead the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near andspoke before Moses and before the leaders, the chief fathers of the children of Israel.

2 And they said:“TheLordcommanded my lordMosesto give the land as an inheritance by lot to the children of Israel, andmy lord was commanded by theLordto give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.

3 Now if they are married to any of the sons of theothertribes of the children of Israel, then their inheritance will betaken from the inheritance of our fathers, and it will be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry; so it will be taken from the lot of our inheritance.

4 And whenthe Jubilee of the children of Israel comes, then their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry; so their inheritance will be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.”

5 Then Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of theLord, saying:“What the tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks is right.

6 Thisiswhat theLordcommands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘Let them marry whom they think best, but they may marry only within the family of their father’s tribe.’

7 So the inheritance of the children of Israel shall not change hands from tribe to tribe, for every one of the children of Israel shallkeep the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

8 Andevery daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel shall be the wife of one of the family of her father’s tribe, so that the children of Israel each may possess the inheritance of his fathers.

9 Thus no inheritance shall change hands fromonetribe to another, but every tribe of the children of Israel shall keep its own inheritance.”

10 Just as theLordcommanded Moses, so did the daughters of Zelophehad;

11 for Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to the sons of their father’s brothers.

12 They were married into the families of the children of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of their father’s family.

13 Thesearethe commandments and the judgments which theLordcommanded the children of Israel by the hand of Mosesin the plains of Moab by the Jordan, acrossfromJericho.

3 Or if he toucheshuman uncleanness—whatever uncleanness with which a man may be defiled, and he is unaware of it—when he realizes it, then he shall be guilty.

4 ‘Or if a person swears, speaking thoughtlessly with his lipsto do evil orto do good, whatever it is that a man may pronounce by an oath, and he is unaware of it—when he realizes it, then he shall be guilty in any of these matters.

4 then it shall be, because he has sinned and is guilty, that he shall restorewhat he has stolen, or the thing which he has extorted, or what was delivered to him for safekeeping, or the lost thing which he found,

25 For whoever eats the fat of the animal of which men offer an offering made by fire to theLord, the person who eats it shall be cut off from his people.

26 Moreover you shall not eat any blood in any of your dwellings, whether of bird or beast.

27 Whoever eats any blood, that person shall be cut off from his people.’ ”

The Portion of Aaron and His Sons

28 Then theLordspoke to Moses, saying,

29 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying:‘He who offers the sacrifice of his peace offering to theLordshall bring his offering to theLordfrom the sacrifice of his peace offering.

30 His own hands shall bring the offerings made by fire to theLord. The fat with the breast he shall bring, that thebreast may be waved as a wave offering before theLord.

31 And the priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but thebreast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’.

32 Also the right thigh you shall give to the priest as a heave offering from the sacrifices of your peace offerings.

33 He among the sons of Aaron, who offers the blood of the peace offering and the fat, shall have the right thigh for his part.

34 Forthe breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering I have taken from the children of Israel, from the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and I have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons from the children of Israel by a statute forever.’ ”

35 This is the consecrated portion for Aaron and his sons, from the offerings made by fire to theLord, on the day when Moses presented them to minister to theLordas priests.

36 TheLordcommanded this to be given to them by the children of Israel,on the day that He anointed them, by a statute forever throughout their generations.

37 This is the lawof the burnt offering, the grain offering, the sin offering, the trespass offering, the consecrations, andthe sacrifice of the peace offering,

38 which theLordcommanded Moses on Mount Sinai, on the day when He commanded the children of Israelto offer their offerings to theLordin the Wilderness of Sinai.

Leviticus 8

Aaron and His Sons Consecrated

1 And theLordspoke to Moses, saying:

2 “Take Aaron and his sons with him, andthe garments,the anointing oil, abull as the sin offering, tworams, and a basket of unleavened bread;

3 and gather all the congregation together at the door of the tabernacle of meeting.”

4 So Moses did as theLordcommanded him. And the congregation was gathered together at the door of the tabernacle of meeting.

5 And Moses said to the congregation, “This is what theLordcommanded to be done.”

6 Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons andwashed them with water.

7 And heput the tunic on him, girded him with the sash, clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod on him; and he girded him with the intricately woven band of the ephod, and with it tied the ephod on him.

8 Then he put the breastplate on him, and heput the Urim and the Thummim in the breastplate.

9 And he put the turban on his head. Also on the turban, on its front, he put the golden plate, the holy crown, as theLordhad commanded Moses.

10 Also Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and consecrated them.

11 He sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times, anointed the altar and all its utensils, and the laver and its base, to consecrate them.

12 And hepoured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him.

13 Then Moses brought Aaron’s sons and put tunics on them, girded them with sashes, and put hats on them, as theLordhad commanded Moses.

14 And he brought the bull for the sin offering. Then Aaron and his sonslaid their hands on the head of the bull for the sin offering,

15 and Moses killed it.Then he took the blood, and put some on the horns of the altar all around with his finger, and purified the altar. And he poured the blood at the base of the altar, and consecrated it, to make atonement for it.

16 Then he took all the fat that was on the entrails, the fatty lobe attached to the liver, and the two kidneys with their fat, and Moses burned them on the altar.

17 But the bull, its hide, its flesh, and its offal, he burned with fire outside the camp, as theLordhad commanded Moses.

18 Then he brought the ram as the burnt offering. And Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram,

19 and Moses killed it. Then he sprinkled the blood all around on the altar.

20 And he cut the ram into pieces; and Mosesburned the head, the pieces, and the fat.

21 Then he washed the entrails and the legs in water. And Moses burned the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt sacrifice for a sweet aroma, an offering made by fire to theLord,as theLordhad commanded Moses.

22 Andhe brought the second ram, the ram of consecration. Then Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram,

23 and Moses killed it. Also he took some ofits blood and put it on the tip of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot.

24 Then he brought Aaron’s sons. And Moses put some of theblood on the tips of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet. And Moses sprinkled the blood all around on the altar.

25 Then he took the fat and the fat tail, all the fat that was on the entrails, the fatty lobe attached to the liver, the two kidneys and their fat, and the right thigh;

26 and from the basket of unleavened bread that was before theLordhe took one unleavened cake, a cake of bread anointed with oil, and one wafer, and put them on the fat and on the right thigh;

27 and he put all thesein Aaron’s hands and in his sons’ hands, and waved them as a wave offering before theLord.

28 Then Moses took them from their hands and burned them on the altar, on the burnt offering. They were consecration offerings for a sweet aroma. That was an offering made by fire to theLord.

29 AndMoses took thebreast and waved it as a wave offering before theLord. It was Moses’part of the ram of consecration, as theLordhad commanded Moses.

30 ThenMoses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood which was on the altar, and sprinkled it on Aaron, on his garments, on his sons, and on the garments of his sons with him; and he consecrated Aaron, his garments, his sons, and the garments of his sons with him.

31 And Moses said to Aaron and his sons,“Boil the flesh at the door of the tabernacle of meeting, and eat it there with the bread that is in the basket of consecration offerings, as I commanded, saying, ‘Aaron and his sons shall eat it.’

32 What remains of the flesh and of the bread you shall burn with fire.

33 And you shall not go outside the door of the tabernacle of meeting for seven days, until the days of your consecration are ended. Forseven days he shall consecrate you.

34 As he has done this day, so theLordhas commanded to do, to make atonement for you.

35 Therefore you shall stay at the door of the tabernacle of meeting day and night for seven days, andkeep the charge of theLord, so that you may not die; for so I have been commanded.”

36 So Aaron and his sons did all the things that theLordhad commanded by the hand of Moses.
